The Birth of Hoggy: Building Neurodiversity Resources That Help

Updated: Nov 23

A Small Gift, A Big Dream: The Journey of Hoggy the Hedgehog's Moonlight Munch

Sometimes, a small gift can ignite dreams you never knew existed. For me, this journey began after surgery — a time filled with quiet reflection and healing.

During my recovery, our six‑year‑old son, who is neurodivergent, gave me a crocheted ladybird he found at the local supermarket.

(He is our grandson biologically, but we have cared for him since he was two days old. By his choice, he calls us mummy and dad, and we, in every way, see him as our son.)

This unexpected treasure opened the door to storytelling. That simple act set me on a quest to create inclusive narratives for children and families — especially those who are neurodiverse, blind, partially sighted, or disabled.

The Beginning of It All

While I recuperated in bed, my son and his dad went shopping. Our son discovered something special: a crocheted ladybird nestled quietly among the trolleys, an item crafted with love. Knowing how much he adored ladybirds, I was moved when he brought it home with the heartfelt words: “You need this more than me.”

That gift caught the attention of Alison Steel, who crochets adorable hedgehogs and hides them around our local area for others to find. Her practice spreads joy, reminding people of the kindness that exists all around.

Alison made a special hedgehog for our boy, complete with lavender‑blue beads that glow in the dark after soaking up sunlight. Our son named him Hoggy. 🦔

I contacted Alison on Facebook to share the name Riley had given the hedgehog. Riley has a quirky way of naming everything with “ee” or “y,” and sometimes with an “i.” Alison encouraged me to write a story about Hoggy.

The Spark of Inspiration

Within weeks, I had written Hoggy the Hedgehog’s Moonlight Munch. This story is more than a bedtime read; it’s a sensory‑friendly adventure that captures both wonder and comfort.

It quickly became a cherished bedtime companion in our home — a story that teaches kindness while addressing the unique needs of children, especially those who are neurodivergent.

At its heart, Moonlight Munch is a gentle tale of small acts of bravery. Each night, Hoggy travels through twinkling meadows, calming children by collecting their worries — those pesky thoughts that keep young minds awake.

Creating an Inclusive Experience

My mission extends beyond writing. I want Moonlight Munch to be accessible for every child. This drive for inclusivity has led me to plan a Braille edition. Statistics show that approximately one in 700 children is visually impaired. By incorporating Braille, I hope to create a space where all children can enjoy Hoggy’s adventures.

It’s crucial to provide opportunities in children’s literature that reflect diverse experiences, ensuring every voice is heard.

The Journey Ahead

Now that the writing is complete, the next chapter begins: publishing. The illustrations are underway, and they’ll take time because I’ve chosen to work with Syeda Naqvi, who is just as new to this world as I am. That was important to me. I didn’t want Hoggy’s journey shaped by established professionals; I wanted it to stay in the hands of newcomers so we could learn and grow side by side.

For me, this isn’t just about putting a story out there. It’s about keeping integrity and unity all the way through. Hoggy’s adventures are being created with fresh eyes and honest hearts. My hope is that they’ll soon sit on shelves in schools, libraries, bookshops, and homes everywhere.

Finding Support and Community

A highlight of this journey has been the overwhelming support from my community. Friends, family, and fellow authors inspire me to pursue my goal.

Workshops, online forums, and community events have connected me with others who believe in the power of inclusive storytelling. These advocates energise my commitment to producing literature that encourages connection and understanding.

A Journey of Kindness and Connection

What began with a little crocheted ladybird has blossomed into a mission to create heartwarming stories for children. As I continue to shape Moonlight Munch, I am grateful for every encouraging message and supportive conversation propelling this journey forward.

I invite you to join me. Hoggy will not just be a character in a book but a beacon of kindness, courage, and connection for all children, regardless of background or ability.

Thank you for being part of this journey. I look forward to sharing Hoggy’s world with you and your children

The Impact of Storytelling

Storytelling is a powerful tool. It shapes our understanding of the world. When we share stories, we connect with others and build bridges between different experiences and perspectives.

For children, stories can be a source of comfort. They help them navigate feelings and fears. Hoggy’s adventures aim to do just that — providing a safe space for children to explore their emotions.

Embracing Diversity in Literature

As I write Moonlight Munch, I think about the importance of diversity in literature. Every child deserves to see themselves in the stories they read. They should feel represented and understood.

By including characters from various backgrounds and abilities, we can foster empathy and understanding. This is vital for creating a more inclusive world.

The Role of Parents and Caregivers

Parents and caregivers play a crucial role. They introduce children to books and stories. By choosing diverse literature, they help shape their child’s worldview.

I encourage parents to engage in conversations about the stories they read. Discussing characters and their experiences can lead to meaningful insights, helping children develop a deeper understanding of themselves and others.

Looking Ahead

As I continue this journey, I am excited about what lies ahead. The world of children’s literature is vast and full of possibilities. I hope to inspire others to share their stories too.

Together, we can create a tapestry of narratives that reflect the beauty of diverse experiences. Let’s celebrate the uniqueness of every child and the power of storytelling to bring us closer together.

In the end, it’s all about connection — fostering kindness and understanding in a world that needs it more than ever. Thank you for being part of this journey with me. I can’t wait to see where it takes us next!
